Low tech communication framework celebrates 10 years
Following a Symposium to celebrate 10 years of the low tech communication framework Talking Mats, Speech & Language Therapy in Practice editor Avril Nicoll reflects on its development and wide-ranging applications in helping people with communication difficulties express their views.
Talking Mats is used by people with learning disabilities, children with Additional Support Needs, and people with aphasia or dementia and their carers. It is also used in any situation where sensitive issues such as abuse are being discussed, and wherever communication may be awkward or inadequate, for example when students are discussing their prospects with careers guidance officers.
