Lost without Words campaign

The Stroke Association highlights benefits of communication support services.
The Stroke Association has launched a campaign to raise awareness of communication disability following stroke. The 'Lost without Words' campaign also focuses on the need for a more strategic approach to the provision of long-term communication support services complementary to speech and language therapy.
The campaign report discusses the advantages to individuals and carers of communication support groups run by volunteers. These include being in an environment that encourages interaction at a time when many people experience social isolation and lose contact with friends because communication is so challenging.
The availability of communication support groups around the UK is patchy at best. The Stroke Association is keen to see the service embedded in stroke care pathways.
The Association is also calling for audits of incidence of communication disability following stroke to help services and funding develop on the basis of known need.
