Michael Palin Centre to roll out schools programme [return]
Government funds information, advice and training programme to help schools in England support children and young people who stammer.

The Michael Palin Centre for Stammering Children is to receive £340,000 of government funding to provide schools across England with information, advice and training materials on how best to support children and young people who stammer.

The renowned facility will develop the materials and training packages in consultation with young people, their families, local speech and language therapy services and schools. The stammering information programme will be rolled out to all schools by 2010. The resources will also be available online.

At the Foundation Level of the two stage programme, participants will gain basic information to recognise stammering and straightforward strategies to help children and young people communicate more effectively in their educational environment. At the Specialist Level participants will gain detailed information about the nature of stammering and its social and educational impact. They will also receive practical guidance on appraising its severity and the reasonable adjustments that could support a child or young person with a stammer.
