About

Speech & Language Therapy in Practice is a quarterly, UK-based subscription magazine. As the name suggests, it is written for speech and language therapists and students, although it may also be of interest to associated professionals. This speechmag.com site complements the magazine and provides professional development and networking facilities for subscribers.

As a speech and language therapist, editor Avril Nicoll ensures that all content of the magazine is relevant, interesting and – most importantly – practical. Readers are guided to consider how an article might apply to their work, whatever their client group, and to use the contents as a tool for reflecting on their own practice. Regular benefits also include the services of a Life Coach, low-cost therapy ideas, reviews of books and products, and information about useful resources.

First published as Speech Therapy in Practice in 1985 by Hexagon Publishing, the magazine briefly became known as Human Communication. Avril took it back to its roots in 1997, introducing speechmag.com in 1998. While terminology and practice have evolved over the years, the magazine’s enthusiastic approach and commitment to developing the profession is unchanged.

Publication is at the end of February (Spring), May (Summer), August (Autumn) and November (Winter). Annual payment is in advance, starting at any time. Paid circulation is around 1700. Most subscribers are individual, UK-based speech and language therapists. Over 20 per cent go to speech and language therapy departments, around 10 per cent to students and 5 per cent abroad.
